VJEL began in 1996 as the Vermont Journal of the Environment. With the support of key Vermont Law School faculty and VLS' Environmental Law Center, the Journal debuted on the Internet with several small environmental articles and a few student-written news pieces. That spring, we changed our name to "Res Communes: Vermont's Journal of the Environment"-and continued to post articles.

In the spring of 1998, Res Communes published its first official volume as the on-line journal of the nation's leading environmental law school. That first issue, concerning cultural perspectives in land use, featured scholars such as Dan Tarlock ("Australian Land Law of Aboriginal Land Rights") and Allison Dussias ("The Conflict Between Recreational Users at Devils Tower and Native American Ceremonial Users").

In 2003, with the publication of Volume Four, the Journal took on yet another name: The Vermont Journal of Environmental Law-reflecting the decision to narrow our focus to environmental law.

Because VJEL publishes on-line, we can facilitate dialogue and provide an international forum for enlightened discourse on a range of environmental issues impacting our region, nation, and world. By combining the cutting edge technology of the Internet with legal scholarship, VJEL ensures both rapid publication and a unique medium for presentation.

Starting with Volume 7 in 2004-2005, VJEL began publishing print copies of our issues. While remaining true to our traditional role as a leader in applied online technologies for environmental law journals, law libraries demanded a more physical presence upon their shelves. Our publications are printed using soy-based ink on 100% recycled paper. The cost of subscription to printed copies is $ 12.95 per issue. Libraries can subscribe through William S.
