SOUTH ROYALTON, VT – Bruce Babbitt, Chairman of the Board of the World Wildlife Fund and former Interior Secretary under President Bill Clinton, will deliver the keynote address

for the symposium, "Confronting Global Climate Change: Using the Law to Protect Future Generations." Babbitt's address, which will mark the start of the two-day symposium, will be delivered on Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, at 4 p.m. at Vermont Law School's Jonathan B. Chase Community Center. His address will be followed by a panel discussion and reception. The event will be open to the public.

Organized by the Vermont Journal of Environmental Law (VJEL) and the Vermont Law Review, the symposium will host a delegation of attorneys and academics experienced in the fields of climate change and human rights. This symposium will explore the law's role in protecting future generations from the effects of climate change.

On Saturday, Feb. 23, panel discussions will begin at 9 a.m. in the Chase Community Center. These discussions will explore how the law is and should be applied to the rights of future generations that may be impacted by climate change. All panels on Saturday are free and open to the public. Vermont Law School's Environmental Law Center and the Climate Legacy Initiative (CLI) are co-sponsors of the symposium. The CLI is a collaborative project between Vermont Law School and The University of Iowa. Its overall purpose is to research and promote legal doctrines, principles, and rules appropriate for recognition by the courts, legislatures, administrative agencies, and private sector institutions to safeguard present and future generations from harms resulting from global climate change. The CLI takes as given that climate change exists and affirms that lawyers have a vital role to play in both public and private discourse and action relative to it.
