Symposium: "Small Town America in an Era of Big Box Store Development"

On March 10-11, 2005, VJEL held its fifth annual spring symposium on "Small Town America in an Era of Big Box Development." The Symposium, held on the VLS campus, began with a dinner and keynote speeches by Scudder Parker and Brian Dubie on Thursday, March 9. On March 10, panels discussed energy issues concerning sustainability, renewable energy sources, carbon constraints and nuclear energy. Symposium presenters discussed these matters as they relate to Vermont, the nation and the world.

The symposium was sponsored by the Vermont Journal of Environmental Journal, the Vermont Law School, and the VLS Institute for Energy and the Environment.

Bill McKibben, Keynote Speech (Mar. 10, 2005).

Bill McKibben is a former staff writer for The New Yorker. His books include Hundred Dollar Holiday, Maybe One, The End of Nature, The Age of Missing Information and Hope, Human and Wild.

Al Norman, Keynote Speech (Mar. 10, 2005).

Al Norman is an advocate against mega-stores and director of Sprawl-Busters. Al Norman achieved national attention in October of 1993 when he successfully stopped Wal-Mart from locating in his hometown of Greenfield, Massachusetts. Al Norman is the editor of the monthly Sprawl Busters Alert, and has traveled throughout the U.S helping dozens of local coalitions.

Geoffrey Shields is the President and Dean of the Vermont Law School.

L. Kinvin Wroth, Former Dean of Vermont Law School and current professor. Professor Wroth served as Vermont Law School's sixth dean from 1996 to 2003 and as President and Dean from 2003 to 2004. He is now a faculty member specializing in procedure, professional conduct, and legal history.

A. Jay Kenlan, Esq., land use attorney and partner at Kenlan, Schwiebert and Facey, P.C.. Jay Kenlan represents clients such as Hannaford Bros. Co. and American Skiing Co. Mr. Kenlan also serves on the Vermont Business Roundtable. He was listed in the Best Lawyers in America for the Vermont Real Estate and Environmental Law Sections, 1999-2000.

Chris Eaton, Member of the American Planning Association and the American Institute of Certified Planners. Co-founded Angelo Eaton & Associates in 1999, where she has been employed in planning and development.

Elizabeth Courtney, Executive Director of the Vermont Natural Resources Council in Montpelier, Vermont.

Kyle Tisdel is the 2004-2005 Editor-in-Chief of the Vermont Journal of Environmental Law.
